New uniform, new shoes or new pencil case. We always focus so much on getting ready for the first day that nobody really preps for the bit that actually matters: the few weeks after it, once the excitement’s worn off and real life kicks back in.
Here’s how to get ahead of it, before term starts.
Start Bedtime Early — Earlier Than You Think
Don’t wait until the night before term starts to try and fix the summer bedtime slip. Start a week or two out, nudging bedtime back by 15 minutes every couple of nights rather than trying to yank it back an hour overnight. It’s a much smaller fight and it actually sticks by the time term begins.
Worth building in now too: cutting screens an hour before bed. It sounds small, but it tends to make the biggest difference between a smooth bedtime and a battle.
Get Ready for After-School Meltdowns. They’re coming and its normal
If you’ve got a returning pupil, you might already know this one. If not, brace yourself: a child who seems completely fine at school and then falls apart the second they see you at the gate is incredibly common. It’s got a name — “restraint collapse” — they’ve held it together all day and you’re the safe place they let it all out.
Plan for it before term starts:
- Keep a snack in your bag for pickup, every day and without fail
- Don’t lead with “how was your day?” straight away, give them ten minutes to just decompress first
- Keep the first couple of weeks’ after-school plans simple. They will be tired, save exciting outings for weekends until they’ve settled back in.
Pre-Empt the Sunday Night Dread
It hits every household eventually, so get ahead of it rather than being surprised by it. A calm Sunday routine helps enormously: laying out uniform together the afternoon before, one small nice thing to look forward to in the week ahead, and keeping Sunday evenings low-key rather than squeezing in one last big outing.
And it’s worth saying — that dread isn’t just a kids’ thing. Plenty of us feel it too, even as adults who logically know Monday will be fine.
The honest bit: however much you prepare, some weeks will still be messy — that’s normal, not a sign you’ve got it wrong. Most families find their rhythm again by week three or four of term. Preparing now just makes that landing a little softer.
